BADGES AND AWARDS

Activity Badges
There are 28 Activity Badges available to Explorer Scouts. These build on the requirements of the Activity Badges in the Scout Section and lead towards the requirements for National Governing Body Awards. Please follow the link to the activity badge section of the scoutbase website, where you will find all the requirements.

Staged Activity Badges
These six badges each have numerous stages and are available across all Sections. They are designed to encourage a young person to develop his or her skills and interests appropriate to the level he or she is able to reach. Therefore, it is possible for a Beaver Scout who is an excellent swimmer to gain a higher level badge than an Explorer Scout who has just taken up the sport. The six staged badges are: Emergancy Aid, Hikes Away, Information Technology, Musician, Nights Away, and Swimmer. Follow this link to find out more.

The Chief Scout's Awards
These start with the Bronze Award in the Beaver Scout Section and progress to the Platinum and Diamond Awards available to the Explorer and Network Sections. The Awards provide an opportunity to gain new skills and to display responsibility and leadership. To earn the Award, a young person is required to complete a variety of activities plus the four Challenges (Service, Skill, Physical Activity, and Expedition). The Chief Scout's Platinum and Diamond Awards incorporate the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze and Silver Awards, respectively, and, provided an Explorer Scout is registered for the D of E Award Scheme, he or she may earn both Awards concurrently. The Queen's Scout Award
This is the highest award a young person can achieve in Scouting. It is available to Explorer Scouts and members of the Scout Network. To earn the Award, a young person must achieve all four Challenges of Service, Skill, Physical Activity, and Expedition, and a residential project, in addition to several other requirements. The Queen's Scout Award incorporates the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award. It may be worn by the holder for the remainder of his or her service in the Scout Movement. The Young Leaders' Award
The Young Leaders' Scheme is for young people between the ages of 14 and 18 who choose to devote a large proportion of their time in Scouting to service in another section (Beavers, Cubs, or Scouts). They must be members of a Young Leaders Unit, and the Scheme offers specific leadership training. The Young Leader's Badge is awarded after completion of Module A Prepare for Take Off. Please See any of the Leaders if you are interested in becoming a Young Leader.

The Explorer Belt
The Explorer Belt is the challenge of a lifetime that is available to Explorer Scouts aged over 16 and members of the Scout Network. It is a chance to undertake an international expedition over ten days that brings a real understanding of a different country, its people, and way of life by travelling through that country, working as a small team to complete surprise projects, and meeting local people. Explorer Belts are run every couple of years by the District / Area. Please let a leader know if you are interested.

The Moving-On Award
This Award is designed to introduce Explorer Scouts to the activities of the next Section, the Scout Network. It encourages progression and offers an opportunity to meet the Network Leaders and members.

The Dragon Award
This Award was created by the Welsh Scout Council in 1998 and is open to all Scouts, Explorer Scouts, members of the Scout Network, and Leaders. The basic idea is to sleep under canvas at least one night per calendar month, whether it be full-fledged camping or tents set up in the Scout hall. The Dragon Award has Bronze, Silver, and Gold stages, and there is no time limit for its completion.

External Awards

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award - For those members over 14 years, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is available to complement the Scout Programme. It is staged at the Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. At each level you must complete four sections; Service, Skill, Physical Recreation, and Expedition, with an additional section at Gold level; Residential. Link to the website for more information.

The Gateway Award - The National Federation of Gateway Clubs operates a special scheme for young people with Special Needs, which leads to the Gateway Award.
